                                                                                   IYA2009

Dear Parents,

Every year we choose the International year theme for our academic year. This year, we have for our theme   "The International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009)" - a year-long celebration of astronomy, taking place in 2009 to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the first recorded astronomical observations with a telescope by Galileo Galilei and the publication of Johannes Kepler's Astronomia nova in the 17th century.

In 1609, Galileo Galilei first turned one of his telescopes in the night sky and made astounding discoveries that changed humankind's understanding of our position in the Universe: mountains and craters on the Moon, a plethora of stars invisible to the naked eye and moons around Jupiter.

To coordinate this huge global programme and to provide an important resource for our participating students, the International  Astronomical Union (IAU) has set a website (www.astronomy2009.org) as the principal IYA2009 resource for public, professionals and media alike.

I am sure interested parents will send in your suggestions to the school for the next academic year 2009-2010.

Suggestions can be made in writing or email at principal@stanislausbandra.in

Global Warming

We are all aware of Global Warming and its effects on us. Yet we are reluctant to deviate from our normal routine if it means to us but, when it comes from little children it is a wake up call for all of us.

Here’s a report on the exhibition, on the theme ‘Global Warming’ at St. Stanislaus High School, Primary Section, held on Saturday 07th February,2009.

Charts, models, worksheets, art work and craft formed the basis of this exhibition. It was effort at its best, between parent and child in which who educated whom could be anybody’s guess. The children were encouraged by their teachers to research. Modern Technology that our children are so savvy at, was used to the hilt. The children showed how melting snow, rising waters, piercing of the ozone layer are all effects of man’s greed and misuse of resources. The Art and Craft teachers became the consultants. The final product was just amazing.

A very practical measure to conserve electricity was suggested by Mrs. Mayrose D’Souza the Headmistress of the Primary Section. Fans in the classrooms to be switched off for an hour everyday. The suggestion was accepted without any fuss. Teachers and students welcomed the idea.

It is a high time we sit up and think how our Mother Earth is being abused by our lack of knowledge, concern and apathy.
